I've Been Bad, My Darlings
Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Well, not really. But I've been ignoring this blog while I've been recovering from unexpected surgery (and I'm totally fine and healthy as a horse now) so I thought it was time to give my thoughts on a few matters.
One -- writing is glorious but the business sucks. I'm not saying publishers suck. They're the nice people who give us advance money and pay for the covers and sell them. It's just the entire business is a soul-sucking monster. Only the tough survive.
Fortunately I'm tough.
Two -- The best friends in the world are writers. They understand why we're crazy, they watch your back, hold your hand, tell you when you're full of shit and tell you when you're glorious. It's worth dealing with the publishing if it brings you the kind of friends I've got.
Three -- Teenagers suck. In one more day I will no longer be the mother of a teenager, and I'm holding my breath. It isn't that I don't worship and adore my children. It's the age that's a menace.
Four -- haviing a hysterectomy is great for losing weight. I'm down 25 pounds, off my beloved Tab and not even eating fast food. Pretty soon I'll start exercising and you'll all think I'm possessed.
Five -- readers are the best people in the world, even if they don't read your stuff, even if they don't like your stuff. Some French dude said "when I have money I buy books, when I have a little left over I buy food." (Can't find my book of famous quotations in my newly clean office but you get the idea). Books are magic. And we like people who believe in magic.
And last but not least, it's time for another drawing in the Basket o' Fabulous contest. This time it might include a copy of THE UNFORTUNATE MISS FORTUNES, and doubtless other wondrous goodies.
I'll be picking a name next week and announcing the lucky winner.
And if you're feeling generous, go check out Brenda Novak's auction to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes research.

That crappy white stuff surrounding it is just my design wall -- the quilt doesn't have any white on it. Machine pieced and quilted by yours truly, and the bids are already up to $260. I'm so proud.
So I'll announce the winner next Tuesday, and I promise not to be MIA again.
